Water-Smart Finca
Water management
In the Axarquía, the question is often not only how much rain falls, but how much of it stays. I help you understand how water moves through your land, and keep more of it in the soil where plants can use it.

Every slope behaves differently
Rain that falls in a few heavy events can run off a dry, compacted slope within minutes, cutting gullies and carrying soil away. The same rain on covered, well-structured soil, guided along the contours, can soak in and sustain plants for weeks.
Which measures make sense depends on the slope, the soil, the rainfall, the geology, how the land is used and the local regulations. Swales, for example, are useful on some sites and inappropriate on others — on steep or unstable ground, or on certain soils, they can do more harm than good. Good water design starts with reading the site, not with a standard technique.
What we work on
- Site and topography Terrain data and observation on the ground: slopes, ridges, valley lines, existing terraces.
- Runoff and flow paths Where water enters, gathers and leaves the property during heavy rain.
- Contour-based design Arranging paths, planting and earthworks to follow the shape of the land.
- Rainwater infiltration Helping rain soak in where it falls, instead of leaving the property.
- Erosion control Protecting gullies, banks and bare slopes with vegetation and suitable structures.
- Soil moisture Mulch, ground cover and organic matter that keep moisture in the soil for longer.
- Appropriate earthworks Swales, infiltration basins, check structures or terraces — only where the site suits them.
- Water-efficient planting Species and placement that make the most of the water the land can hold.
Priorities, not a catalogue
The result is a set of measures in order of priority for your site — often starting with simple, low-cost steps. Earthworks or changes to watercourses may require permission from the municipality or the river basin authority; I will point out where that is likely to apply.
